Full mission name: Emissio and Climate Impact of Alternative Fuel (NASA/DLR Multidisciplinary Airborne Experiment


Contrail cirrus yield the largest share to the climate impact from aviation, even exceeding the radiative forcing from its carbon dioxide emissions. A decrease in contrail ice particle numbers might provide a promising route for the fast reduction of the climate impact from contrail cirrus. Emissions from HEFA biofuel blends were measured with instruments on NASA’s DC-8 research aircraft in January 2018 during the ECLIF/NDMAX campaign. DLR`s Advanced Technology Research Aircraft (ATRA) Airbus A320 equipped with two International Aero Engines IAE V2527-A5 was chased in flight traffic restricted areas above Germany. NASA's DC-8 preformed in-situ measurements in the exhaust of the A320 burning conventional Jet-A1 fuels and their blends with HEFA bio-fuels with the aim to investigate the effects of biofuels on emissions, contrails and climate. The flight experiments were accompanied by ground based measurements of engine emissions of the different fuels.
